Common Problems

Osteopathic treatment can assist in the recovery from and alleviation of pain associated with an extensive range of conditions and common ailments. Our patients range from new borns through to the very elderly. Here is a list of patient types and some of the most common conditions we see at the clinic.

About half of our patients suffer low back trouble:

Most back pain result from mechanical disturbances of the spine – postural strains, joint derangement and spinal disc injuries. Osteopathy, with its comprehensive approach to health care, is a particularly successful approach to treatment. Nobody should allow themselves to become a martyr to chronic back pain without consulting an osteopath. More and more people are taking this step and being delighted by the results. Osteopathy is effective in dramatically shortening the recovery time for back pain and thus getting people back to work and activities quickly.

Over half are women:

Many women are working mothers and both aspects of their lives can five rise to problems, from perennial headache to severe musculo–skeletal disorders. Many headaches originate form stiffness and tension in the neck and osteopathic treatment can often bring relief. Pregnancy can put a strain on the low back and other areas of the body and osteopathic treatment can help the body to adjust.

A quarter are in their forties:

Many patients are losing fitness at this stage in their busy lives and are more prone to injury and slower healing. Osteopaths consider all the factors, examining posture and the strength and flexibility of muscles, ligaments and tendons. Treatment is designed to alleviate current problems and to help prevent recurrences.

Many are elderly:

Pain-killers are not the only solution for the aches and pains associated with ageing. For more permanent relief it is necessary to eliminate the underlying causes of pain, a job for which the osteopath is specifically trained. Osteopathy can also help in reducing pain and stiffness in the less acute stages of arthritis.

Many problems relate to work:

Work, whether it be at a computer or in heavy industry, can give rise to disorders of the muscles, tendons and joints, particularly in the back, neck, hands and arms. Osteopaths treat many conditions relating to the workplace and can give remedial advice and preventative exercise.

Post-operative outpatients care:

Osteopathy can speed up the recovery from surgery and ensure that the recovery is attained to full potential. Osteopaths are well placed to prevent and treat the effects of post surgical scarring and muscle shortening, support strengthening and healing, and advise you on long-term maintenance exercises.

Athletic Injuries:

The growth of interest in sports and fitness training has led to an increase in sports-related injuries, which osteopaths are uniquely equipped to handle. Many of the world’s top athletes today acknowledge the debt they owe to osteopathic treatment.

Muscular Pains:

Muscle pains in the legs and arms are some of the commonest medical complaints. These conditions can be alleviated, but rarely cured, by drugs. To obtain more permanent relief it is necessary to try and eliminate their underlying causes something the osteopaths specifically trained to do.

Foot Pain:

The foot is an incredibly efficient piece of human engineering; a complex arrangement of twenty-six bones united by ligament to form thirty-three separate joints. It is also a frequent source of pain, which can be severe enough to make walking difficult and life miserable, a disability which can often be relieved by skilled osteopathic treatment.

Tension Headaches:

It is generally recognized that a large proportion of headaches originate from stiffness and tension in the neck. This gives rise to pain often radiating over the skill from the base of the neck to the eyes. Heat and analgesic tablets frequently ease this pain but long-term relief often requires accurate osteopathic diagnosis and treatment of the underlying problem.
